Background

 

To provide expert professional/technical legal advice and guidance to colleagues, managers and partner agencies to contribute to the delivery of both Councils’ objectives and priorities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide legal and procedural advice to Members and Officers relating to civil litigation matters, particularly including commercial property litigation, and some possible housing
    litigation, corporate and individual bankruptcy and complex debt recovery work.
  • To provide specialist litigation advice in relation to prescriptive rights, rights of way, adverse possession, extension of leases, enfranchisement and enforcement of other covenants, dealing with appeals against improvement notices under the Housing Act 2004 before the First Tier Tribunal, disrepair and other housing litigation work, advising in relation to the Communications Act 2003 and the installation and removal of telecommunication apparatus, and advising re the recovery of residential care home fees and providing technical advice and guidance on issues such as placing a charge, deferred payment agreements and national income.
  • To undertake the above specialist work in-house, to obviate externalisation of work.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Exectuive with current membership of the Law Society or Bar Standards Board.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and expert knowledge. 
  • Experience of working within a legal setting in a politically sensitive environment, providing high-quality advice to a wide range of customers.
  • Ability to provide clear advice on complex matters to both to both the client base and other colleagues.
  • A strong focus on outcomes to achieve strategic objectives.
