Revenues Assistant (Processing & Reconciliation)
Location - Tower Hamlets, London
Hourly Rate - £16.18

Background
Contribute to a team that provides a comprehensive income processing, reconciliation and support service for Revenues Services. This includes support for all directorates and all the Council’s income streams. This is to include supporting management in the development of policy and strategy on all matters relating to Revenues Processing & Reconciliation.
Key Responsibilities
- Be part of a team responsible for providing an income processing and reconciliation service for revenues systems.
- Balance payments between the payment processing system and revenues applications and investigate discrepancies.
- Maintain the revenues application’s suspense and dummy accounts ensuring payments are allocated to the correct accounts and applications.
- Receipt and bank all payments received via the post, various council offices and the council’s main bank account.
- Maintain procedures for the recording of post dated cheques ensuring they are presented on the due date.
- Process returned and post dated cheques.
- Ensure recalled direct debits payments in respect of Council Tax, Business Rates and Rents are promptly processed from the council bank accounts to the applications.
- Undertake annual archival of the team’s documentation.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of legislation and working practices to improve the standard of service provided by the team.
- Investigate missing payments on behalf of customers and Council staff and ensure they are allocated to the correct accounts
- Issue items of controlled stationery in accordance with the appropriate guidelines and maintain accurate supporting documentation and reconciliation records in respect of this.
- Provide information for consultation documents, statutory returns and questionnaires concerning all aspects of income collection and reconciliation.
- Attend and contribute to team meetings convened by management to discuss all aspects of Revenues Services.
- Liaise with outside organisations including banks and customers to resolve missing payment/payment allocation issues.
- Participate in schemes leading to individual development plans for staff.
- Ensure that all duties and responsibilities are discharged in accordance with the Council’s Health & Safety at Work Policy.
- Undertake all duties in accordance with statutory requirements, standing orders, financial regulations and the scheme of delegation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Basic knowledge of local taxation and revenue collection systems and understanding of the sources of local government income.
- Knowledge of bank clearance processes.
- An understanding of the role of income processing and reconciliation
- Demonstrable competence in Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and Access) and excellent numeric skills
- Experience of working in an area of revenue collection which includes revenue processing and reconciliation.
- Proven experience of payment balancing and resolving imbalances and posting errors.
- Proven experience of investigation and clearance of payments in suspense accounts.
- Ability to accurately maintain supporting documentation in respect of the above.
- Proven ability to liaise with all levels of staff, members of the public and other organisations in a professional and tactful manner.
- Ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines and contribute to the efficient operation of the team.
